Behind the Curtain: Making Art Sustainable

What happens when a group of artists decides to give equal importance to their creativity and their sustainability? Foresight's Ensemble-in-Residence, the Filament Theatre Ensemble, is pioneering the concept of zero waste theatre as they develop a new production, From the Circle.

Come to Green Drinks to learn how the ensemble's creative team is altering the ecosystem of the arts for the benefit of the institution, the environment, and the audience.

Panelists

Jack Novak, Literary Manager
Jack studied theatre at Northwestern University, focusing on acting and playwriting. He has been working with Filament since 2008, and is currently directing the ensemble's next production - From the Circle: Remembering the Earth through Folktales. Originally from San Diego, he has been in the Chicago area since 2005, and currently lives in Andersonville with a cat named 'Marcel' after Marcel Marceau.

Kevin McGuire, Sustainability Consultant
Kevin’s theater experience is quite outdated compared to that of his fellow panelists—just a few college productions many years ago.  His sustainability experience, however, is current and growing.  Trained here in Chicago in The Natural Step Framework for Strategic Sustainability, he has helped teach The Natural Step and is using it to guide the Sustainability Planning process he is facilitating for the Filament Theatre Ensemble.  Kevin holds an MS in Conservation Social Science from the University of Idaho and is pursuing an MBA in Sustainability Management at DePaul University.

Julie Ritchey, Artistic Director
Julie Ritchey is a co-founding member of the Filament Theatre Ensemble, where she currently serves as the Artistic Director. In addition to her work with Filament, she has worked with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Summer Theatre of New Canaan, Northwestern’s National High School Institute (Cherubs), Northlight Theatre, and many others. She is a graduate of Northwestern University's department of Performance Studies, and a proud member of the American Alliance of Theatre and Education.
